Blending noir, myth, and nostalgia in literary fiction

I craft literary fiction from my home in North Vancouver, British Columbia, the ancestral land of the Squamish people. Since settling here in 2005, I’ve balanced my writing with work as a civil engineer and K12 writing tutor. My eclectic background spans from logging towns in western Washington to pre-handover Hong Kong, and even a commune near Lillooet, BC. After a stint in the Navy Seabees, which included deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan post-9/11, I found my way back to the literary world.

My passion for literature is diverse, encompassing modern Korean noir, classic Japanese fiction and myth, and postwar suburban nostalgia, particularly the works of Richard Yates. In 2016, I co-edited the first translation of the Konjaku Monogatari, a collection of Japanese folktales. My formal education in writing culminated in 2024 with an MFA from Antioch University in LA and a Certificate of Creative Writing from UCLA Extension.

The Korean author Cho se-hui, British sci-fi writer China Miéville, and Richard Yates have profoundly shaped my literary voice. Currently, I find myself returning often to “The Dwarf” by Cho se-hui, a book that continues to captivate and inspire me.
